HISTORY

“Make Everything Great Again” is a graffiti artwork placed on the wall of a barbecue restaurant in the old town of Vilnius railway station area (Lithuania) with a provocative name “Keulė Rūkė” (The Pig Has Been Smoking), done by the artists Mindaugas Bonanu and Dominykas Čečkauskas. The artefact depicting the US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump giving a French kiss to the Russian President Vladimir Putin was made known to the broad public on May 13, 2016. The caption “Make Everything Great Again” is a teaser on the Trump’s slogan for his presidential rally “Make America Great Again.” This artwork is a mockup of the 1990s graffiti painting “My God, Help Me Survive This Deadly Love” portrayed on the Berlin Wall by Dmitri Vrubel. The artwork was completed with the use of the wheat paste technique.

Make Everything Great Again appeared on the wall after Putin and Trump exchanged their statements of mutual admiration, with the Russian leader giving Trump a definition of “a very colorful person, talented without any doubt”, whereas Trump was saying in exchange that it was “a great honor to be so nicely complimented by a man so highly respected within his own country and beyond.”

One of the artists, Dominykas Čečkauskas, in an interview for the “Agence France-Presse” said: “We envisaged similarities between the two characters (Trump and Putin). They both have their egos inadequately big, and this makes it hilarious that they get along well,” Čečkauskas said. “We are currently experiencing a sort of a Cold War again, and America may acquire a president who will want to be friends with Russia.” Artists with the help of the mural predict that if Russia and the USA would ever “marry” again, it would echo in the Baltic states too, be it tongues or tanks.”

The case has received an immediate and enormous response in all kinds of social and other global media.
